What are modal auxiliary verbs?


Modal auxiliary are used to specify such as possibility, strong possibility, remote possibility, request, permission, ability, and social obligation.

Modal auxiliary verbs are,

  • Can (ability, request, permission)
  • Could ( past ability, request)
  • May (strong possibility, request and permission)
  • Might (remote possibility)
  • Should ( advice, social obligation, theoreticalpossibility)
  • Must ( compulsion, obligation)
  • Would (past form of will, polite request)
  • Ought to ( advice, national obligation )
  • Used to ( past habitual action no existence in present)

Ex; She may sing a song  to impress him.

Ex: We should respect elderly citizens.

Ex: you must answer atleast ten questions out of twenty.

Ex; it might rain today.

Ex: Rohan was the only candidate who visited us yesterday, it might be left the main gate open.

Ex; He used to speak two languages when he was a child.

Ex: I am unable to pick your phone, could you drop me a message?

What is difference between Auxiliary verb and modal auxiliary verb?

Both work auxiliary verbs but they are differ from their functions, auxiliary verb work according to the subject of the sentence,if the subject is singular then auxiliary verb is singular but if the subject is plural then the auxiliary verb is plural,

But modal auxiliary verbs are used with all subjects according to the their own characteristics.
