TYPES OF MODALS



Types of modals

Modals include modal verbs, semi-modal verbs (is also known as marginal verbs) and

They combine with main verbs and modify their meanings.
मॉडल्स में मोडल क्रियाएं, सेमी-मोडल क्रियाएं (इसे सीमांत क्रियाएं भी कहा जाता है) और शामिल हैं

वे मुख्य क्रियाओं के साथ संयोजन करते हैं और अपने अर्थ को संशोधित करते हैं।

Modal verbs
The modal verbs are: can, could, may, might, will,shall, must, should and would.


Modal verbs always use two different ways.
(1) Modal verbs always use first form of verb.
And the format should be used
Subject + modal verb +( first form of verb) + object.

Ex- she can dance on the stage.
Ex- it may rain today.

(2) modal verbs use third form of verb when they usually show past time,
And the format should be used.

Subject + modal verb + have + (third form of verb) + object.
Ex- he may have taught her.
Ex- she can have come here.


Semi-modal verbs
The semi-modal verbs (or marginal verbs) are: dare, need, like, want and used to.

They work similarly to modal verbs but also share some characteristics with main verbs.
वे मोडल क्रियाओं के समान ही काम करते हैं लेकिन मुख्य क्रियाओं के साथ कुछ विशेषताओं को भी साझा करते हैं।

Firstly , i am going to explain modal verbs and their use,,,

1)SHOULD, OUGHT TO, these two help
to express advice,
ये दोनों मदद करते हैं सलाह व्यक्त करने के लिए,
And the format should be used.

Subject + should + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- you should work hard.
Ex- he should wake up early in the morning.

Format for OUGHT TO,

Subject + ought to + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- you ought to sing a song.
Ex- they ought to play cricket for the country.

2) MUST, HAVE (GOT) TO
These modals help to express obligation.
ये तौर-तरीके दायित्व को व्यक्त करने में मदद करते हैं।
And the format should be used,

Subject + must +(first form of verb) + object.

Ex- she must complete this work.
Ex- you must keep this to yourself.

Format of Have to (Have got to) both work similarly.

Subject + have to / has to + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- you have to call me.
Ex - she has to go school.



(3) CAN, COULD, BE ABLE TO These help to express ability,
ये क्षमता को व्यक्त करने में मदद करते हैं,

Can and (be able to) help to express present and future ability.
वर्तमान और भविष्य की क्षमता को व्यक्त करने में मदद कर ता है
And the format should be used,

Subject + can +( first form of verb) + object.

Ex - she can do anything for you.
Ex - i can teach you English.

Format for (be able to),

Subject + is / am/ are + able to + first form of verb + object.

Ex- i am able to teach you English.
Ex- she is able to help you at the moment.



Could and was / were able to show past ability.

And the format should be used,

Subject + could + first form of verb + object.

Ex- she could speak two languages when she was ten year old.
Ex- i could swim when i was in five.

For the format of was able to / were able to,

Subject + was /were + able to +( first form of verb) + object.

Ex- she was able to speak two languages when she was in ten.
Ex- they were able to play cricket when they were in school.


4) WOULD, USED TO
Both help to
express past habits,
दोनों अतीत की आदतों को व्यक्त करने में मदद करते हैं,


USED TO
(Used to) indicates past habits and states which were true in the past but they are not true any more.

अतीत की आदतों और दशाओं को इंगित करता है जो अतीत में सच थे लेकिन वे किसी भी अधिक सच नहीं हैं।
And the format should be used,

Subject + used to + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- Teacher used to punish them.
Ex- i used to hate singing those days.

Note:- The negative and interrogative forms of used to are :-

Format for the negative statement.

Subject + did not + use to + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- Teacher did not use to punish him.
Ex- i did not use to hate singing those days.

Format for the Interrogative statement.

Did + subject + use to + (first form of verb) + object.?

Ex- Did teacher use to punish him?
Ex- Did i use to hate singing those days?

For the format would,

Subject + would + (first form of verb) + object.

Ex- he would teach her.
Ex- i would call him an uncle.

5) WOULD helpto express unreal situations, unreal situations is also called hypothetical condition.

 WOULD अवास्तविक स्थितियों को व्यक्त करते हैं, अवास्तविक स्थितियों को काल्पनिक स्थिति भी कहते हैं।
Note:- unreal situations are divided in three parts. अवास्तविक स्थितियों को तीन भागों में बांटा गया है।

(1) Lets discuss the first unreal situation, unreal situation always formed in two statements.
And the format should be used,

First statement ( if + subject + were + object ) and second statement ( subject + would + V1st + object)

Ex- if she were a bird, she would fly in the sky.
यदि वह एक पक्षी होती , तो वह आकाश में उडती ।

(2) Second unreal situation,
And the format should be used,

The First statement ( if + subject + had + object) The second statement (subject + would + V1st + object)

Ex- if i had money, i would give money to you.

Ex-अगर मेरे पास पैसे होते मैं आपको को पैसे देता

(3) Third unreal situation,
And the format should be used,

first statement ( if + subject + had + V3rd + object) second statement ( subject + would have + V3rd + object)

Ex- if she had informed me, i would have helped her.
अगर उसने मुझे सूचना दी होती, तो मैं उसकी मदद करता।



(6)CAN,COULD, MAY, These help to show permission ,
ये अनुमति दिखाने में मदद करते हैं

Note:-Can and may are used to give permission. May is more formal than can in day to day life.
अनुमति देने के लिए can और may का उपयोग किया जा सकता है। may, can की तुलना में अधिक औपचारिक है

And this format should be used,

Subject + may / can +(first form of verb) + object.

Ex- children may play here.
Ex- you can go now.

Note:-Can, could and may are used to ask for permission. Can is the most direct of the
three, could is more formal and indefinite , and may is the most formal.
अनुमति मांगने के लिए can, couldऔर may का इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है। can सबसे प्रत्यक्ष है ईन
तीनो मे , could अधिक औपचारिक और अस्थायी हो सकता है, और may सबसे औपचारिक हो सकता है

And the format should be used,

Can / may / could + subject + (first form of verb) + object?

Ex- can i touch your phone?
Ex- may i start teaching you?
Ex- could you pass me a note book?

NON - CONTINUOUS VERB

Non-continuous verbs   Some verbs can not be used in continuous tense because such verbs are not used in the ING form. Similar verbs are called non-continuous verbs. Non-continuous verbs includes these characteristics (1) verbs that use thinking (2) verbs that show possession (3) verbs that reflect emotion, mental state, and condition (4) Verbs that reflect perception. Non continuous verb में शामिल होती है ये विशेषताएं होती हैं (1)  ऐसी क्रियाओं जो सोचने मे प्रयोग होती है (2) ऐसी क्रियाएं जो आधिकार दर्शाती हो (3) ऐसी क्रियाएं जो भावना, मानसिक दशा, और दशा को दर्शाती हो (4) ऐसी क्रियाएं जो जो धारणा को दर्शाती हो! (1) verbs that use in thinking:-  think, know, mean, mind, remember, suppose, etc . (2) verbs that show possession :-  own, have, belong, comprise, possess, contain, consist, and etc. (3) verbs that reflect emotion, mental state, and condition :-  believe, like, dislike, love, adore, want, wish, desire, hate, agree, trust, imag...

AS, WHEN AND WHILE,( THESE THREE WORDS HELP TO EXPRESS SIMULTANEOUS ACTION)

There are many actions that occur at the same time that we have to use as, when and while to narrate them,,,, As, when and while, they are called  conjuction which are used to add sentences. Actions that occur at the same time are also called simultaneous action. While , While is used to indicate simultaneous long action, while using while we should keep in mind that the time in both sentences should be the same. Ex:- While they were playing cricket, I was studying.  Ex:- I am teaching you while you are disturbing me.  Ex:- I made him understand while he  looked at them.  WHEN,  When is also used to describe simultaneous long action, using when, we also have to keep in mind that time should be same in the both sentences.
